Report

The IAUD International Design Awards were established in 2010 in order to promote and champion UD by recognizing and rewarding outstanding achievements and in particular products that ensure people of all ages and abilities can enjoy an active, independent and productive life.

Upon carrying out strictly neutral examinations of the 39 entries received from both within Japan and overseas, the IAUD International Design Award 2019 Selection Committee selected the 3 winners of the “Grand Award”. Furthermore, the 10 winners of the “Gold Award” and 8 winners of the “Silver Award” in various categories, as well as the 14 winners of the “Bronze Award” were announced.

Following this, Mr. Fumikazu Masuda, Co-chair, Executive Committee, presented award certificates to the award winners and Grand Award and Gold Award winners gave presentations.

After that, Dr. Roger Coleman, Chair, Award Selection Committee, offered the message by sound-recording: “In this time, the Jury decided it was time to raise the bar by setting a series of challenges to all participants and asking them to push the boundaries of Design for All and Human-Centered Design in new and exciting directions. I am thrilled by the progress made in recent years, inspired by the IAUD International Design Awards, and privileged to see each year’s new crop of entries. This year there is no doubt that the bar has been raised, but I hope this is only the beginning of a new adventure in UD.”

Mr. Masuda

Also Mr. Masuda, Co-chair of the Selection Committee, commented: “The prerequisite to UD or inclusive design is to embrace diversity. I believe that the concept of common recognition and coexistence, which recognize each other's differences, is a sense of value that adds weight to the current world situation. We will focus our activities in transforming UD from being a specialized design field to a more global concept that will be familiar to all designs.”

Mr. Toshiharu AraiThen Mr. Toshiharu Arai, the members of the Selection Committee, also commented: “The award-winning designs include a wide range of fields as: information equipment, robots, tourist boats, autographs, design guides, cosmetics and education. It also includes a wide range of organizations like: large and small companies, consortiums, NPO and educational institutions. This variety of winners represents the spirit of the IAUD International Design Award. At the same time, the three winners of the Grand Award show us the new dimension of UD."

After closing the event, friendly chats then took place among the participants.
