Conference Declaration

In 2002 we organized our first international conference, “For All, For Everybody.”
We defined Universal Design that “Design should create the social environments that respect and support the dignity of humans.” We have found a direction for our commitment.

Today we are faced with acute issues:

Rising incidents of terrorism,
A serious illness on the rampage in parts of the world,
The gap widening between those who have and those who have not.
And in Fukushima and other affected areas, people are suffering from having lost their homes.

Facing up to these challenges, Tokyo is on the move with its eyes set beyond the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games to a legacy of an inclusive city.
We care about each individual as we care for our globe and its future.
We believe that doing our best for each person is to do the best for everybody.
We will continue to go forward with Universal Design as the best framework for the 21st century realities in order to create a connected and sustainable world that realizes social justice and happiness for all.
We affirm and declare these commitments at the conclusion of this 5th International Conference for Universal Design in Fukushima & Tokyo 2014.
