Toshiharu Arai

Professor, Kanazawa College of Art: Japan

After studying industrial design at Tokyo University of Education, Mr. Arai commenced research and development work in product design and design at the Design Center of Hitachi Ltd in 1972. Since 1978 he has operated a workshop with a friend and for the past seven years has engaged in the production and design of tools for people with various physical limitations, from small children to the aged, as well as in architectural planning. Through his experience in designing products for various users over the past seven years, Mr. Arai has come to understand both the necessity and possibilities of universal design.

In 1985, Mr. Arai took up his current post as professor at Kanazawa College of Art. In addition to teaching universal design in which various users participate, he engages in UD research and development of tools and utensils used in everyday life, such as scissors and tableware, to furniture and household equipment. Professor Arai also acts as a coordinator and consultant for universal design in public buildings. In international design competitions he has received many awards for his outstanding achievements including the Good Design Special Award. Professor Arai also works as a director for the Rehabilitation Engineering Society of Japan, as a juror for the Good Design Award, as an international juror for the International Universal Design Competition for Students, and as a supervisor for the 48 Hour Marathon for Universal Design.
