Professor at the Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo. Born in 1946 in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture. Doctor of Engineering (the University of Tokyo). After being an assistant professor of metallic materials at the School of Engineering of the University of Tokyo, and a professor at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology of the University of Tokyo, he became a professor at the Institute of Industrial Science of the University of Tokyo in 1992. Worked as a chief of the Center for Collaborative Research of the University of Tokyo from 2001 to 2002. Outside the University of Tokyo, he has been a science advisor at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology since 2004, as well as honorary chairman of Eco Material Society, chairman of International Green Purchasing Network, and many other advisory positions.
