Tadao Koga

Professor Emeritus (Ph.D. in Engineering), Kyushu Institute of Design : Japan

Architecture / Housing / Industrial Design / Welfare Apparatus

Born in 1934 in Fukuoka prefecture.


After graduating from Craft Course, Faculty of Fine Arts of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music in 1957, he joined Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. and assigned to Design Department.
In 1969 he became a lecturer at Engineering Design Department, Faculty of Design, Kyushu Institute of Design. While working for the Kyushu Institute of Design as associate professor and then professor, he went to England for a year to study at the Royal College of Art as an overseas research scholar (of the Ministry of Education). He received his doctorates of Engineering from Nihon University (No.3450).
After taking mandatory retirement in 1998, he became professor emeritus. He then taught at Department of Design of Kyushu Sangyo University’s Faculty of Fine Arts for seven years starting April 1998 and retired in 2005.
In academic community, Dr. Koga holds prominent positions such as in the memberships of Japanese Society for the Science of Design (honorary member since 2000), Japanese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, Architectural Institute of Japan, Design Research Association (honorary member since 2006), and Japanese Association for Caring Society for All.
He also participated in various social activities, serving as a jury of MITI Good Design Award, member of International Exchange Committee of Japan Design Foundation, Chairman of Kyushu Design Council, Chairman of Kyushu Design Competition Award Committee, expert member of MEXT Council for University Chartering and School Juridical Person Subcommittee, member of Fukuoka Small & Medium Enterprises Promotion Center Steering Committee, etc.
