On
Dec. 6, the First IAUD Open Seminar was held in the auditorium at the
Headquarters of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. (in Ginza). 400 people including
general attendees participated in the seminar.
The commemorative lecture was given by Mr. Roger Coleman, Professor at the Royal College of Art. The subject of the lecture was "Universal Design: social challenges and business opportunities." He began his lecture with the message: "We are disabled by design, enabled by design," and gave an explanation on the current situation of the aging population in the world, in Japan, and in EU. Afterwards, he introduced the cases in which the sealed packages of bacons in supermarkets and the tools for gardening were improved as a result of behavioral observations and the talks with the users. The lecture was concluded with the introduction of the idea of "Inclusive Design," of which he is an advocate.

In
the symposium, the panelists each introduced their unique efforts, and they
took questions from the floor. To the remark by Mr. Mitsuo Kawaguchi, Chairman
of the Board of Directors: "Our aim is to dissolve the Association," there
was a question from the audience: "Will it be necessary to tell the consumers
that a product is a UD product?" We agreed, "Our ultimate aim is that all products
and things will be of UD and that the consumers will be able to select a good
product for themselves by themselves. In such situation, the Association will
not be necessary." We also discussed the issues regarding intellectual property
in managing the Association. It was a symposium in which we confirmed the importance
of having talks with the consumers in managing the Association.

At the end, Professor Roger Coleman made a comment. He stressed on the importance of clearly establishing the cycle of having talks between the consumers and the developers and the importance of communicating and sharing the results more aggressively of what have been accomplished and accumulated to date in Japan which were introduced in the symposium. He concluded his comment by expressing his expectations for the activities of IAUD including the transmission of information on the global basis, which would realize the above.
In another hall, the participants looked closely at the panels and the products of the member companies which were set up in the similar manner as during the inauguration ceremony and the commemorative party.
