Theme: "Opening Doors to the World through Universal Design"

The First IAUD Open Seminar that serves as a bridge linking the manufacturers and the users

The purpose of holding this seminar
The "International Conference for Universal Design in Japan 2002" held in Yokohama in November, 2002 has yielded much result and has presented us with major challenges. "The International Association for Universal Design" will be inaugurated as a new organization that seeks for further development of the ideals of universal design and seeks to solve the issues addressed in the Declaration. In commemoration of the inauguration, and in order to seek to create a society in which everyone feels comfortable to live, we will hold an open seminar.
"What sort of issues must the manufacturers tackle?" "What sort of framework must be implemented in order to make the voice of the users heard?" These are some of the questions from various quarters that the Association will address for a start.
Your participation, opinions, and proposals are highly appreciated.

When we speak about universal design (UD), everyone would say that that is a wonderful ideal. However, are all products and services provided based on the ideals of universal design? When a company manufactures a product, or thinks up of a new service, it seems that there is a barrier that blocks the realization of UD. What exactly is that barrier? Is the information from the users being communicated to the manufacturers?
Based on the Declaration at the International Conference for Universal Design in Japan 2002, we will clarify the divergence of the ideals and the practice of UD and will seek for the direction to pursue in our future activities in this panel discussion.
