Today, various companies in various industries and various people gathered here in Tokyo (Shibuya) for the establishment of the "International Association for Universal Design" which seeks to popularize and realize universal design.
The association inherits the ideals and the results of the "International Conference for Universal Design in Japan 2002" held last year, and it will carry out activities (placing importance on having talks with the consumers) including further promotion and sophistication of the development of and the research on the projects involving universal design (the environment, the products, and the services), the maintenance and the enlargement of international networks, and timely transmission of information on the results of its activities through the use of various media.
Through such activities, we hope to make the Japan-originated concept of
universal design widely known to the world as a way to revitalize the Japanese
economy and to contribute to the healthy development of the society, which,
we hope, would lead to the improvement of the lives and the welfare of all
humanity. With such hopes in mind, we hereby declare the establishment of
the "International Association for Universal Design."

At the commemorative party, Mr. Shoichi Nakagawa, Minister of Economy,
Trade and Industry, and Mr. Taizo Nishimuro, Vice Chairman of Nippon
Keidanren (the guests of honor) each made a congratulatory speech. They
took time during the party to look closely at the panels and the products
of the member companies.
We read out the messages from the overseas advisors, and concluded the party with the closing remarks from Mr. Kazuo Okamoto, Vice Chairman of the Council. However, many people remained in the site to talk or to look at the exhibitions. Thus the party was successfully ended.
